I’ve been searching for a round marble-top coffee table for a while now, and finally found one on Craigslist! I looked around for a long time, in second-hand shops and the online auction, and they’re harder to find than I thought. The few I did find were priced way out of our budget.
I was thrilled because I knew this table would be a better fit with the look I’m trying to create in our living room. Our old coffee table was beautiful, but it was bulky.
There was only one problem- it measured higher than the average coffee-table height, but was not as tall as a dining table. It reminded me of a foyer table you see as you enter a hotel- one usually displaying a beautiful flower arrangement.
If this was going to be a coffee table, I’d have to cut the base and shorten it.
The base looks old but I wasn’t sure about the top. It’s very lightweight and because of the texture beneath, I’m not 100% certain it’s a real marble top. I searched the internet to find out and became more confused than when I started. I wasn’t going to do the knife test and I was about to cut into the base, anyway.
I am 100% sure cutting the base meant trimming down on the value. (Pun intended)
Usually I will research furniture and determine the value before making major changes. This table is an exception. First, I have a feeling the top probably isn’t real marble even though it’s pretty. Second, I wanted this to be a functional piece to be used as a coffee table. It wouldn’t have been much good to me leaving it the way it was. It was also affordable!
I began by removing the top from the base, which was HARD! I ended up having to split the wood piece between the pedestal and the top in order to get the screws out. They wouldn’t budge when I tried to turn them.
Once the old board was removed, I pieced it back together as best as I could to trace it on a new board and mark the screw holes so the screws could go back into the holes that were already in the top.
I screwed the new board into the pedestal, then turned the base over on the underside of the top, and tried screwing it in. The screws wouldn’t go into the old holes so I had to glue the board onto the top with Liquid Nails! Even though the board was screwed into the pedestal base I added wood glue between them for extra security.
My measurements worked out great! It’s the perfect coffee table for our space, now!
I really like the detail on the legs of the table!
It fits the look of our living room and doesn’t cover up the rug as much as our old table did.
The only thing I bought new to decorate the top was the candle. Everything else was just from shopping our house. The shell bowl belonged to my Grandparents, so I was glad to have a use for that! And the plant is obviously artificial! I considered a real plant for the table but I knew that would become a play area for the cats!
I’m only showing close-ups right now because I’m currently creating a gallery wall behind the sofa. I have a few art prints that belonged to my Grandparents that I’ll be including in the gallery. Once I have it all together, I will share the look of the entire space!
I’m so happy to finally have a marble-top table in our living room! Or maybe it’s some other material. Either way, I love the look of it. <3
