These old metal chairs sat in my Grandparent’s carport for as long as I can remember. They were right outside the door that entered into their kitchen and I sat on them many times just enjoying the shade and the breeze coming through their carport.
I was so happy they were passed along to me years later. They are pretty chairs and the memories I have of them are so special. I have no idea how old they are, but I know they were around way before I was.
When they came to our house, I thought the perfect place to put them would be in our carport! I wanted a seating area in the shade and to keep them out of the sun and the rain to preserve the paint and the color.
It crossed my mind to refresh them with paint, using the same colors. But I decided to leave them just as they are. The arms are a little rusty and the paint is peeling in a few places, but it gives them character! And they’re exactly as they were when my Grandparent’s had them.
I kept it simple by adding a decorative vinyl mat, a small side table, and a plant that doesn’t require much attention. The mat can easily be sprayed off when it gets dirty.
There are so many pretty outdoor pillows to choose from in the spring that would add a nice look to the chairs, but I feel they would be useless. I probably wouldn’t leave them on the seats when I sit on them and I don’t want something else to keep clean.
This is a wonderful seating area and since it’s around the side of the house, it has some privacy from the road. It’s also a great place to sit and have coffee! I felt the chairs and the mat were enough to make it look nice, but I kept it low maintenance.
I think the decision to leave them just as they are was a good one. They might need a fresh coat of paint in the future, but for now, they’ll remain this way. The best part is remembering how they were in my Grandparent’s carport…and now I can enjoy them in mine.
